In Which I Still Live

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I am here. And God, do I hate this layout. I have a new one ready, but I couldn't get it online before this weekend.

So, where have I been? Well, just here, turning my computer on once in a while and playing Hearts.

I have returned to Montreal in August. I live in a residence for people with mental health problems. There are eight of us (nine when the other girl comes back from the hospital).

Once I got a table to put my computer on, I called a company to get an internet connection. They required a prepayment, so I did that, and faxed a confirmation. Then I waited. And waited. In the past month, I spoke with three or four different people from the company, had my order canceled a couple of times, was given two different appointments that were both canceled for various reasons, etc.

Their system just can't accept that multiple people living at the same address could want separate internet connections.

I finally got a connection with a different company, activated today. The guy worked around the system, so that, while the bill will be sent to my home address, it is written that I live next door.

I was bloody relieved when I turned my computer on and was signed in to MSN. AT LAST! Needless to say I am pissed at the other company and will obviously ask to get my prepayment back.

In the meantime, I have a new boyfriend. He is one of the residents here. I don't feel very well, rather depressed. And the web has gone on without me. I have many things to catch up on.

I really don’t care!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

I admit this post is partly because of a very tiny butthurt due to my own Irish ancestry. But it's mostly because of WTFness. YouTube decided to make their logo green for St Patrick's Day. No biggie. It's posted on their Facebook page. Some people reply with "nice!" and similar comments, but a few people posted with "I don't care" or even "I don't fucking care". If you really don't care, why do you bother telling the world about your carelessness?

"I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO TELL YOU HOW IRRELEVANT THIS IS IN MY LIFE!"

Cats’ Sense of Smell and the Facebook News Feed

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

No, I won't be linking these two topics. I'll just talk about one, then the other. ;)

I gave my cat toy mice to play with. She absolutely loves them. They do not contain cat nip. They are made of plain plastic and fake fur. She can smell them. If I put one in my pocket, she can smell it if she gets close enough.

I was quite surprised by the furry one (the living one, not the mice) this morning. Yesterday, I had put one of her toy mice in my pajama pants just for the pleasure of watching her smell it and retrieve it (I wasn't wearing the pants). This morning, the mouse wasn't in my pocket anymore. She jumped onto my bed and started mewing. Then her head was near the famous pocket. She smelled it. She knew there was a mouse in there, or there had been one recently. I never thought she could smell those mice even after they had been gone for hours!

On a completely different note: the Facebook news feed. If you use Facebook, you've surely noticed it. As far as I can tell, it basically doesn't filter anything, unless you tell it to. It shows you everything that appeared on friends' walls. I didn't mind, until the weekend came, and a particular friend found himself with lots of times on his hand. Lots of time which, naturally, he devoted to one of those applications I really don't give a shit about.

damn news feed (hosted at imageshack.us)

And this is only a part of all those damn things. And if I click the X that appears on hover, it doesn't just delete the story, it blocks this person from my news feed. Then again, it's not like I care about him enough to be sorry if he doesn't show up on there.

Looking for Blogs

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

You'd think someone who has been blogging since 2003, joined a few forums during that time, made friends on the web, etc., would have a good list of blogs to read. I don't. So I want you to give me good blogs to read. After all, I keep reading from other people that they "cleaned [their] Google feed reader, going down from 2578295 feeds to 1784584". That's fun for you, but I can only sit there, jealous that you would have so many interesting things to read.

I don't want the average blog by a girl in her early 20s who talks about her life. I think I already know enough of those. No offense to those I do read, you are awesome, it's just that I'm looking for a different type of blog this time. I'd mostly love topical blogs. I'm interesting in video games (no one who's on a "kill Nintendo" war, please), movies, music, arts and computer/internet stuff (software, design, security, tips, etc.). I am not interested in fashion (unless it's alternative fashion) and celebrity gossip. Oh, blogs about politics or science can also be interesting, provided they're not written by religious nuts. Those would anger me.

Of course, anything funny or involving kittens is also welcome. I'm not only looking for deep, insightful things that will change the course of the universe.

Suggestions both in French and English are welcome.
