Adventure Quest Resources

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Adventure Quest seems to be a pretty popular game. People even come here to get information. So I'll provide them with some.

My first resource is the forums. There are numerous threads providing help and you can ask questions if you are stuck or lost. I intend on making some FAQs of my own here, but for the time being, I will give you links to the threads I make most use of.

  • The One FAQ topic: an important thread to read if you need help
  • Armor Index: a list of all armor by name, by level and by element. Links to armor details (price, level, statistics and image).
  • Clans / Clubs Forum
  • Encyclopediac Monster Index:a list of all monsters by name and by their base element.
  • Equipement Comparison: for example, which fire weapon is best?
  • House and House Items Index: a list of all houses and house items. Each house is linked to a page detailing its price and a few other info (such as how many potions it will give you). House items are listed along with location and price.
  • Random Monster Encounter List: a list of enemies you can meet through random battles, such as by clicking "Battle Monsters" while in Battleon. Each enemy is shown with its base element, level and picture (in the .swf format).
  • Pets and Guests Index: a list of all pets and guests and how to obtain them. Each one has its details listed (statistics, price, etc.).
  • Quests Lists: a list of all quests, including class quests. Each quest has a detailed transcript of dialog, but sometimes lacks a bit of info on where to go.
  • Shields Index
  • Spells Index
  • Weapons Index: contains a list in alphabet order, and a list divided by element, then by level.
  • Miscellaneous/Accessories Index: a list of all other items. Linked to their page, detailing their price, location and effect(s).

Here are a few more things for those curious to see how the game works.

That's it for now, but I'll surely be adding more in the future, so stay tuned for updates.

This is unfair!

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I'm in a surprisingly good mood. I say surprisingly because there are so many things that should make me angry, and yet I'm not.

First, my roommate has discovered that our bandwidth is getting sucked quite quickly. The day before yesterday, 9GB were downloaded. In a single day. Now, my roommate downloads a lot, but not that much. He wants us to keep checking how much bandwidth is being used on our computers. In Windows XP, you can have this icon show up that, when you double click on it, will tell you how much was uploaded and downloaded from your computer. I wouldn't mind much if a) I didn't feel like I'm being monitored closely by Big Brother for something that CANNOT be my fault, b) I didn't get obsessed because it's numbers and numbers make me do all sorts of weird things and c) it didn't make a new icon appear in the bottom right of my screen, which I always want to keep "clean" (i.e. free of anything but the MSN Messenger and AVG Anti-Virus icons).

Second, because of this surveillance of his, I am forbidden to play a certain online video game (Adventure Quest, mentioned a couple of posts before). This is quite unfair because the game is a small one. It's not like I download a 4GB game every day. I think I'll cheat and play anyway.

Third, as I had to keep myself busy, I continued watching the third season of Doctor Who (the new series, not the old one). There are twelve plus one (yeah, number freak) episodes per season. As only twelve episodes fit on a single DVD, I could only watch up to the twelfth one. I don't know where the finale is! Give me the finale! I watched the two first episodes of the finale, I want to see how it ends! My roommate is still sleeping, he tends to get up late these days. He works at night, by the way, so not "late" as in "OMG I slept all day!!111!!!1", but late as in "no more than two hours before going off to work".

Quick Review: Adventure Quest

Monday, December 17th, 2007

During the weekend, I subscribed to the game Adventure Quest. This is a pretty quick review of what I've seen up to now.

The graphics range from horrible to great. As the game is on an ongoing development, I assume they sometimes stick in new monsters that haven't received much work, and sometimes rework on existing monsters. Some things like the dragons are absolutely beautiful, but I've seen monsters that looked like I made them in MS Paint when I was 8.

The actual characters (i.e. the one you control, for example) are well designed, with a few exception once again.

Contrary to some reviews I've read, I really don't find advertising to be annoying at all. When I log in, and whenever I feel like it during game play, I can view an advertisement from a sponsor. By doing so, I receive a price (usually gold). That might seem to be quite a put off but, up to now, the advertisements were either for movies or for video games, so it didn't bother me at all.

The game in itself has some interesting points. As in every RPG I can think of, you must level up, get money, find new items, etc. I find it odd, though, that leveling up doesn't influence your statistics at all. To increase them, you must go through training against one of three characters. The process can get a bit repetitive. It would be good if leveling up also increased your statistics.

What's the point of leveling up, then? Items can only be bought starting from a certain level. When you start off, there are very few items you can buy and you gradually gain access to more and more. You will also meet new enemies and unlock new areas by leveling up.

I find battles are a bit long. You generally tend to be of a quite equal force with your enemy. If you take, for example, Final Fantasy, you will fight enemies with low statistics and very high HP, while you have low HP and high statistics. In Adventure Quest, your HP is pretty much the same as that of enemies of the same level as you, and so are your stats. You only need to hope that your attacks deal more damage than theirs, so that you can win the fight.

I like how they handle elements. Every enemy and item is assigned one element (wind, fire, etc.). They then have weaknesses and strengths depending on that element. Water enemies are generally weak against lightning, ice enemies against fire, etc. Since the game is played in your browser, you only need to hover over the enemy's name to see its statistics, including element-related ones.

Brief, I'd give the game perhaps three stars and a half. It has great potential, it already has something in it, but it does lack a bit more work, which I hope to see coming.
